What is behind the answer

This page shows the reading one week late. Crises move in days: your free Ravenmaster panel shows the current overall reading every Friday, and paid plans every area, every weekday.

Would it have warned before?

We ran the method on every business day since 2007, using only data that had been published by that day.

24 of 31stress events since 2007 were preceded or met by a Caution or Alert reading. We list the misses too.
108 daysof warning in the Geopolitics area before Russia invaded Ukraine
6%of days at Alert. It does not cry wolf: most days, it says calm.

Backtest results are hypothetical: no reports were sent on those dates, and the method was designed with knowledge of past crises. See the full record and how it was tested.

Crises move in days, not weeks.

Silicon Valley Bank went from the first public worry to a closed bank in about 48 hours. In September 2022 the Bank of England had to step in within days of the UK bond sell-off. In August 2024 a jump in the yen reached tech shares and crypto around the world within three trading days. In weeks like these, a weekly reading tells you what has already happened. A same-day report gives you time to think and act.

Questions people ask

Is the stock market going to crash?

Nobody can know when a crash will come, and anyone who says they do is guessing. What can be measured is stress: how hard it is for banks and companies to borrow, how nervous markets are, whether money is leaving. Our latest public reading is Stable. We check 138 sources every weekday and send the reading free every Friday.

Will the stock market crash in 2026?

We do not forecast. Since 2007 our method has been at its highest level, Alert, on about 6% of business days, mostly around real crises such as 2008, Covid in 2020 and the 2022 gilt crisis. Most of the time the honest answer is that the indicators are calm.

When will the stock market crash?

Crashes cannot be timed. They usually come after warning signs build up in several places at once: credit becomes expensive, funding markets tighten, volatility jumps, a currency or a large firm breaks. We watch those signs together, so you do not have to.

Is a recession coming?

A recession and a market crash are different things, and one does not always bring the other. We do not forecast recessions. We do track signs that have come before them in the past, such as the gap between long and short US interest rates, and report them in plain English.

What are the warning signs of a stock market crash?

In past crises the early signs were: wider gaps between company and government borrowing costs, banks borrowing from the central bank's emergency window, deposits leaving banks, sudden jumps in volatility, sharp moves in the dollar, yen or yuan, and stress spreading from one market to another. No single sign is enough; what matters is several at once.

Can anyone predict a crash?

No. What a careful method can do is notice when stress is building, as it did before most past crises, and say so calmly. Our record is a backtest and hypothetical, and no method catches every crisis.
